15 Miles (x25) on the Erie Canal Tour

The Tour starts in Buffalo on August 27th and ends in Albany/Rensselaer on September 2nd (Labor Day). We will be cycling 7 days with 6 nights of lodging. The route is primarily on the Erie Canalway Trail which is part of New York’s Empire Trail system. The surfaces will be about 45% paved trails, 40% crushed limestone trails, 1% natural surface trails (single or double track), and 14% on the road. Expect a few sections with busy roads and lots of pedestrian traffic on the trail before Syracuse due to the State Fair. Skinny road tires are not recommended.

There is information on the Event Page and information about POIs, lodging, food choices in each day's Description section.

You can either ride self-contained and carry all of your gear or you can get a group of riders together and use your own SAG vehicle to carry your luggage (and reduce your cycling miles each day). Your SAG Group can either cycle with Rob’s SAG Group at a 3*/3+ pace or your Group can make it a “Map Ride” and set your own pace, start when you want, sightsee where you want, etc. Rob will let everyone know what his SAG Group’s plans are each day, like their morning start time, SAG stops, POI breaks, lunch and dinner plans, etc. Each SAG Group will determine their own riding and driving schedules, handle mechanicals and other on-the-trail issues, and ensure all their Group members make it the hotel each afternoon.

Riders are responsible for booking their own lodging, parking, transportation to and from Buffalo, and transportation from Albany back to Buffalo. Some options for the return trip are the Amtrak trains that have roll on bike service (limited tickets per train), Amtrak and box your bike as luggage using stations that have baggage handling, Enterprise car rental, a bike mailing service like www.bikeflights.com, go back in your SAG vehicle, ride your bike back 375 miles, or fly back.

Contact Rob Hipskind if you have questions or if you want to be added to the “Looking for a SAG Group” email list. Once your SAG Group is developed, let Rob know so all riders can be added to the Tour's email distribution list.
